Elkins City Park

Official Website - Elkins Parks and Recreation - www.elkinsparksandrecreation.com

The Elkins Park & Recreation Commission provides year-round opportunities with their recreation programs and facilities in over 70 acres of parks. Residents and visitors can use the extensive park system for picnics, walks, fishing, organized athletics or just a peaceful moment. It is estimated that nearly 200,000 people utilize the parks annually.

This gem near the center of town was deeded to the city in 1893 by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis and his wife Kate. When first designated a park, it was filled with 300 year-old oak trees and was essentially a primeval forest, complete with ferns and rhododendron. Part of that original deed contains restrictive orders about the cutting down of healthy trees and construction of any new buildings.

Located near downtown Elkins, this park has become the hub of activities from Augusta Festival to the Forest Festival. There are picnic sites, pavilions, horseshoe pits, and a basketball court, along with modern playground equipment and many other park amenities. Its mature oaks and landscaped flower beds create a wonderful place to have family gatherings, whether a large reunion or a simple afternoon break with the kids.

Through cooperative efforts of the community and funding from the city, the City Park is one of the nicest in the state. It is located one block off of Randolph Ave. between Park Street and Sycamore Street. Its many entrances provide access to Davis & Elkins College, the Wees Historic Neighborhood and the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
