Plans for Annexation into the City of Elkins

Elkins City Council has discussed the idea of Annexation over the last several years, and now we are moving forward to get public involvement and interest so we can begin on a plan.

What would annexation mean to a property owner? The advantages of being in the city limits would mean a property owner would have a government entity to represent them. It would also provide zoning protection, 24 hour police protection, street maintenance, lower garbage rate, spring clean up, fall leaf pickup and full fire protection.

What would the cost associated with being in the city limits be? Property tax rates would increase 24.90 cents per $100 assessed value for Class l1. This would mean an increase of
on a house assessed at $72,000.
Business & Occupation tax for businesses have a rate structure for different categories of business.
The City can not provide water and sewer service for those properties already under a public service district.

Annexation can be done as a minor boundary adjustment or by an election.

If you are now outside the city, how would you feel about being annexed? Council is interested in hearing your opinions. City Council feels the benefits of being in the city limits out way the added taxes. Write Elkins City Hall at 401 S. Davis Ave. or call the Mayor’s office at 636 1414.
